Hoxton Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy

Hoxton Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing professional carpet, rug, upholstery and hard floor cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and the wider public. This Health and Safety policy outlines the responsibilities, procedures and standards that guide our work at all domestic and commercial locations within our service area.

Our Health and Safety Objectives

Our primary objectives are to prevent injury, ill health and property damage arising from our cleaning operations. We aim to identify and control risks associated with cleaning chemicals, machinery, manual handling, slips and trips, electrical equipment and work in clients premises, and to continuously improve our health and safety performance through monitoring, training and review.

Management Responsibilities

Hoxton Carpet Cleaners management has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety policy. Management will ensure that all work is properly planned, supervised and resourced so that it can be carried out safely and without undue risk. This includes selecting suitable equipment and products, conducting risk assessments, providing appropriate personal protective equipment and ensuring that all staff receive suitable health and safety training for their roles.

Management is responsible for reviewing this policy regularly to ensure it remains effective, complies with applicable health and safety legislation and reflects current safe working practices within the cleaning industry.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees, whether full-time, part-time or temporary, share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Staff must follow all safety instructions, training and procedures, use equipment correctly, wear the personal protective equipment provided and immediately report any hazards, accidents, near misses or defective equipment to management.

Employees must not carry out any work for which they have not been trained or that they believe cannot be completed safely. They are expected to cooperate fully in all health and safety matters, including attending training, participating in risk assessments and supporting the implementation of control measures.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Hoxton Carpet Cleaners conducts risk assessments for typical carpet and upholstery cleaning tasks as well as for any specialist or non-routine work. The assessments identify potential hazards, evaluate the associated risks and determine appropriate control measures. These may include the use of safer cleaning products, the adoption of safe operating procedures, the provision of protective equipment or the introduction of additional supervision.

Before work begins at a site, our operatives will consider site-specific factors such as access, flooring type, ventilation, electrical supply, the presence of children, pets or members of the public and any client-specific requirements. If the risk is considered unacceptable, work will not proceed until suitable controls are in place.

COSHH and Chemical Safety

Cleaning solutions and stain removal products used by Hoxton Carpet Cleaners are subject to Controls on Substances Hazardous to Health. We obtain safety data sheets for all products, complete COSHH assessments where required and ensure that chemicals are stored, handled, diluted, used and disposed of in accordance with manufacturer guidance and legal requirements.

Only authorised and trained staff are permitted to use professional carpet cleaning chemicals. Products are clearly labelled and never transferred into unmarked containers. We avoid unnecessary use of hazardous substances and, where practical, choose low hazard or eco-friendly alternatives that still meet cleaning performance standards.

Use of Equipment and Machinery

All carpet cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners, steamers and other tools used by Hoxton Carpet Cleaners are selected for suitability and maintained in good working order. Equipment is inspected regularly and removed from use if found to be faulty or unsafe. Staff receive training in the safe operation, movement and cleaning of all machinery they use, with particular attention to high-pressure, high-temperature and electrically powered units.

Operatives ensure that trailing leads and hoses are positioned to minimise trip risks and that all electrical equipment is connected to suitable power sources. Equipment is never used in a manner contrary to the manufacturer instructions or our own safe operating procedures.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Many carpet cleaning tasks involve lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying equipment. Hoxton Carpet Cleaners provides manual handling training to staff so that they can move equipment safely, use trolleys or other aids where appropriate and avoid unnecessary strain. Heavy items are lifted by two people where required, and operatives are expected to ask for assistance rather than attempt unsafe lifting.

We encourage regular breaks during intensive work, particularly when operating heavy or vibrating machinery, and promote techniques that reduce repetitive strain and musculoskeletal injuries.

Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls

Our cleaning processes may involve water and cleaning solutions that can create temporary slip risks. Hoxton Carpet Cleaners manages this by using appropriate extraction methods, controlling the quantity of water applied, and where possible avoiding over-wetting. Operatives place warning signs where surfaces may be damp or where hoses and cables cross walkways, and advise clients on safe access routes during and immediately after cleaning.

Work areas are kept as tidy as possible, with waste removed promptly and equipment stored safely when not in use. Staff are instructed to report any damaged flooring, loose carpets or other environmental hazards they encounter while on site.

Working in Clients Premises

Our staff operate in homes, offices and other occupied buildings. Respect for clients property and privacy is combined with a strong focus on safety. Operatives will identify fire exits, avoid blocking escape routes, and comply with any site-specific rules that relate to security, fire safety or emergency procedures.

When working in areas accessible to members of the public, children or pets, additional precautions are taken to secure chemicals, tools and cables, and to supervise equipment at all times. No machinery or cleaning products are left unattended in a way that could pose a risk.

Training, Information and Supervision

Hoxton Carpet Cleaners provides initial and ongoing training to all staff in health and safety, safe use of equipment, chemical handling, manual handling and emergency procedures. New employees receive induction training before being allowed to work independently on site. Refresher training is provided where needed, and any changes to procedures or equipment are communicated promptly.

Work is supervised to an appropriate level depending on the experience of the operative and the complexity of the task. Supervisors are responsible for checking that safety procedures are being followed and for addressing any unsafe practices immediately.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported to management as soon as possible. Hoxton Carpet Cleaners maintains records of incidents in order to identify trends, implement corrective actions and improve safety performance. Where required, incidents are reported to relevant authorities in line with applicable regulations.

Staff are briefed on emergency arrangements including first aid, fire safety, evacuation and spill response. Appropriate first aid supplies are available to operatives, and emergency contact information is provided through internal channels.

Continuous Improvement and Policy Review

Hoxton Carpet Cleaners is committed to continual improvement of health and safety standards. We regularly review risk assessments, procedures, equipment and training in light of new guidance, technology, incident reports and feedback from staff and clients. This Health and Safety policy is reviewed periodically and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, best practice or our service operations.

By working together and following this policy, all employees and contractors of Hoxton Carpet Cleaners help to ensure that our carpet and upholstery cleaning services are delivered safely and responsibly across our service area.
